Since I want to go into the epidemiology field specifically, I found the SER conference to be an amazing, insightful opportunity. Navigating the poster sessions with a guide gave us insight into different topics of the biomedical field, and, after attending another data visualization workshop at SER, I took mental notes of the ways presenters organized graphs and data, so that I can incorporate them into my future posters. Thanks to Dr. McEligot advocating for us, the others and I discussed Public Health and Epidemiology graduate programs with representatives from UCLA, which made me feel much more confident and motivated about the application process this fall. Similarly, I was able to have breakfast with Diane Lauderdale and post-doc students, and I learned a lot about negotiating salaries, addressing expectations in a first-time job, and classes I can take to prepare for graduate programs.

I think the most comforting thing I learned from the conference is that, while I don’t have the future 100% figured out yet, in terms of career and research goals, many professionals at the conference started off in that same place and then took on many projects as time went on. As long as I keep pushing along and going after opportunities to learn, I will make my way, eventually.

Additionally, the other students in the cohort and I were able to get closer and explore the city with Dr. McEligot, and I think that is special, as well.

The SER Conference had a lot of great workshops that provide very insightful information. Some of my favorite workshops were the R-Studio workshop and the "How to make a picture speak a thousand words" workshop. The R-studio workshop provided us with handouts that included commonly used R commands. With my current work at CSUF, it was very useful to attend an R-studio workshop. "How to make a picture speak a thousand words" workshop spoke about the different software that are used for creating or editing graphs for poster presentations. I also got the opportunity to have breakfast with an expert. The expert I chose was an epidemiologist who has been in the field for many years. She spoke about data collection and provided advice to students entering the field. Overall, it was a great experience.

The SER conference was an incredible experience. It was an excellent opportunity for us to learn about the research experience, and gain insight into the field of Epidemiology. We got a chance to speak with experts in the field, and learn about their journey to success. Along with this we attended insightful workshops on statistical programming in R as well as data visualization. The R workshop was a mild introduction to the software, guiding us through different coding methods and using various packages. The data visualization reviewed a myriad of ways data can be visualized through a graph. They covered topics like using visual cues, coordinate systems, proper scale, and context. This was perhaps my favorite workshop, as it opened the many ways information and data can be displayed to the population.
